What to wear…Budget Day
It’s the most exciting day in the UK’s fiscal calendar.
Outlining the government's plans for raising or lowering taxes, Budget Day also reveals the big decisions on spending for the year ahead. We are treated to the customary photo call outside 11 Downing Street, the Chancellor holding the red box proudly for the assembled journalists and the helicopter whirring excitingly overhead.
Now whilst the economically excited among us will pore over numbers in the red book, those more creatively inclined are perhaps most interested in the optics of this monetary moment.
So whether you’re part of the Treasury’s top team or holding the red box yourself, here is SW1 Style’s top picks for a successful Budget Day.
Pick a bold colour.
Stand out from amongst the crowd by picking a bold colour, particularly from the primary colour wheel. Many female Treasury ministers have knocked it out of the park in recent budgets.
We are a particular fan of Lucy Frazer’s cobalt Luna dress from Goat that she wore on 2021 Budget Day. Four buttons on the left hand shoulder give the dress a classic but quirky look.
The dress is available on super sale on The Outnet in a striking coral hue.
2. Consider the choices of your colleagues.
Whilst WhatsApping your ministerial colleague to ask them what they will be wearing is probably at the bottom of your to-do list, do consider what others in the line-up may choose. If it’s going to be a cautious budget, opting for something wild and dangerous is probably not a good choice.
3. Avoid literal dressing.
Today is not the day to dress like the red box. Avoid wearing red at all costs - and gentlemen, don’t wear a rosy coloured tie - or socks.
And we don’t have long to wait. The next Budget Day or Spring Statement is pencilled in for 23 March 2022.
