Fashion highlights from the Coronation of King Charles III

The big day has arrived - and what a spectacle it was! The typical wet British weather couldn’t dampen spirits, with thousands lining the streets of Westminster to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III.

Months in the making, all the pieces of this elaborate and gloriously British ceremony came together, and we were treated to many, many highlights. As you would expect, SW1 Style will be focusing on the fashion of the day- and we weren’t disappointed by what we saw.

Let’s dive in!

Queen Camilla: made from silk woven in Suffolk, her gown by Bruce Oldfield was embroidered all over with sprays of wildflowers entwined with tiny ribbons of celebratory bunting as well as the names of her children, grandchildren and her dogs. Oldfield told Women’s Wear Daily that the design “reflects a more fluid and modern representation of the king and the queen consort’s affection for nature and the British countryside”. It carried her royal cypher- and even her shoes were monogrammed.

The Princess of Wales: an ivory silk caped gown designed by the Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton.

The dress, embroidered with rose, daffodil, thistle and shamrock motifs to represent the four nations, flew a flag for the love of the British countryside and respect for nature and the environment. Kate, who had been rumoured to be considering wearing flowers in her hair in place of a tiara, chose a wreath-like headpiece of silver bullion leaves set with crystals. Princess Charlotte had a ‘mini-me’ version of her mother’s outfit.

Duchess of Edinburgh: The Duchess wore a Suzannah couture floor-length embroidered gown with a Jane Taylor headpiece.

Zara Tindall: a bespoke Jane Taylor Millinery feather Percher hat, Laura Green coat dress, Jimmy Choo Romy pumps, East/West baguette bag from Strathberry, Calleija earrings and a diamond bow brooch borrowed from her mother, Princess Anne.

Queen Maxima: a bespoke Jantaminiau white dress, teamed with a natural clutch and the Gianvito 105 Nude leather pumps by Gianvito Rossi.

Crown Princess Mary: a bespoke Soren Le Schmidt Coat Dress, Carle and Copenhagen Vanessa crocodile clutch, Gianvito 105 Purple suede pumps and a Jane Taylor Millinery diamond pleated headband with a bespoke veil.

Akshata Murty, wife of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak: the Claire Mischevsni ‘Alexandra’ Dress

Theresa May: the former Prime Minister wore an Ivory Wool Crepe Coat with Ornate Embroidered Obi panel by Daniel Blake -a nod to sustainable theme of this historic coronation. Her orange hat was by Liz Felix.

Penny Mordaunt MP: a teal dress and cape, which was custom-made by Safiyaa and with embroidery that reflected the fen embroidery of the Privy Council, stitched by Hand and Lock. A matching headpiece from Jane Taylor Millinery completed the look.
